A really good read

This book, The Red Queen by Philippa Gregory was one of those books you just couldn't put down until you'd finished it kind of books. If you enjoy history, as I do then you should enjoy this one.  It is set in 1453 and tells the story of Margaret Beaufort, Heiress to the red rose of Lancaster and her life and bitter struggles during the War of the Roses. As a child she has a fierce and unwavering sense of destiny. If not a nun then she'll be Queen of England.

As a young girl Margaret is sent to a loveless marriage to Edmund Tudor in remote Wales, where she gives birth to a son whom she names Henry after her cousin Henry V1 of England who was on the verge of madness. She was determined that her son would become King one day, regardless of the overwhelming power of the York dynasty. She sends Henry into exile and pledges him in marriage to the daughter of her enemy Elizabeth Woodville.

I was given my book as a gift and was unaware that it was the second book of a trilogy, The Cousins War. However this did not spoil the book for me and I now intend  to read the first book The White Queen and thereafter The Other Queen which I'm sure will be equally as stunning.

  1. I haven't read these books yet, I must try to get back to reading some historical fiction again as I seem to lean towards modern crime fiction at the moment. I did enjoy her books 'Earthy Joys' and 'Virgin Earth' about both John Tradescants the elder and the younger:)

  2. It's a while since I read any historical fiction, but I've heard that this series is particularly good. I'm currently reading a book by Robert Goddard. He does excellent page-turners that are best left for an empty day in the summer! I've loved reading all your blog entries and have become a follower! Best Wishes, J

  3. Hi Patricia and excuse the non-book related comment! Thought I'd answer here to make sure you saw it! I have added my blog name to my photos in two ways. To begin with I found that when I export the photos (to make them smaller to load quicker for anyone who looks at my blog) there was an 'Add watermark' box to tick and type in what you want them watermarked with. But I couldn't chose the font that way, so I now do it when I edit the photos in Picasa. I just chose to add text before saving and exporting them without a watermark. It's a bit laborious, but I like the way it looks! Hope this helps - if I can do it, anyone can!

    1. Many thanks for that Alix. I'll give it a go. Do you think it's necessary to join Picasa as all my photos are stored on 'My Pictures' although I don't think I can edit from there but would worry that I am doubling up on all my photos on computer. Thanks again for your help.
