Reflection of Polperro

Last week I read a lovely post about the Cornish fishing village of Polperro posted by Sarah from Down by the Sea which you can read here. This evoked many memories for me as that is where we spent our honeymoon in 1970. Excuse the photo - no digital in those days.

Polperro has a wealth of art galleries and potteries and I still have a few pieces that we treated ourselves to. These two have been sculling around the house for years and I never knew where to put them - normally at the back of a cupboard somewhere as they went out of fashion many moons ago but I could never bring myself to throw them out. So glad I kept them.

Having found these two pieces I rummaged around in my sideboard to discover these two sixties vases made by Whitefriars - they were popular at the time because they had the fashionable 'Tree Bark' finish to them. They were wedding presents and I do still use them from time to time.

But my 'piece de resistance' was in the loft (needless to say hubby wasn't best too pleased to have to go up and search for them!). Does anyone remember or seen this coffee set on their travels? - made by J & G Meakin back in the 1960s. Again another wedding present and oh this has got me thinking now about more hidden treasures that may be lurking in the loft!!

When my daughter E saw them she was amazed and wondered whether I'd been watching Kirstie's Vintage Home on the tv. Apparently just the kind of things she searches for when designing people's homes. Methinks hubby has another loft trawl coming soon!

Do you have any old  vintage style pieces that you'd forgotten you had?

Welcome to my new follower Tangled Sweetpea - it's lovely to have you on board.

See you soon and have a good week

  1. Your post makes me wish I were not one of those people who cleans out every so often and is too quick to give away such items as these. But your treasures are fun to look at and certainly bring back my own memories of those days. Can't wait to see what else you (your hubby) finds up in the attic!

I used to watch The Antique Roadshow.. and those glass vases of yours a couple were sold for a lot of money... your items are collectors.. Now you will have the chance to show them off.they are really lovely Patricia.

  10. Hi Patricia,

Those glass vases are so beautiful especially the one on the left, it's such a lovely colour. I agree with Val, your items are probably worth a little fortune now that everyone is on the hunt for "vintage".

  11. We visited Polperro last year, it was the first time I'd been since I was a child, it is a very pretty village and how lovely to have spent your honeymoon there. I recedntly gave away loads of Hornsea ware pottery from the 1970s as I just hadn't the cupboard space for it anymore but I still have several things that were my mother's like a 1950s tea service and some 1930s fruit bowls. J & G Meakin were a local firm to where I live now and I've seen that coffee set before, they may have it, or others similar to it, in the Potteries Museum in the city centre as they have super collections from most of the potteries that were (and some still are) in this area:)

  12. We love Cornwall, but we usually stay on the North coast. There's many places on the South coast I'd like to visit so we'll have to stay in that area next time. I've been married 22 years, but have very few wedding presents left. That's what becomes of having a clumsy husband.

  13. I'm very fond of pottery from Jersey where we honeymooned in the mid 1960s and also Poole pottery.
When we moved to Italy my mother looked after a lot of our china and now I have some items back again as well as her own tea and coffee sets, vases etc. from an earlier era. Now I'm passing the coffee sets to our daughter. She loves a retro black and white porcelain Danish coffee set which is just right for serving espresso coffee. If I had the chance to holiday in Cornwall I would be collecting small items from today's Cornish potteries.

  14. Hi Patricia, well I've never OWNED any of that J Meakin design but I certainly recognise it! You are sitting on a fortune, dear, if you have more of this stuff tucked away! Get him up there for a ferret around!

Sadly, most of my early 70's stuff has bitten the dust over the years, my husband is a generous washer-upper but a bit lethal with the old porcelain, I fear!

Am clicking the 'followr' button, and am just ashamed to say I have left it this long! Lx

  15. Hi Patricia, Your posts are always so interesting. I'm learning so much about your area of the world. That and the places you visit, like France. I love tagging along on your adventures.

I regard to the comment you left on my blog:
I can't wait to see your wreath. There are so many different ways to make them. I have not seen one that I did not like. There is something about using sheet music that delights my heart.
Have a lovely day and thanks so much for stopping by and visiting.
    Your blogging sister, Connie :)
P.S. I was in a secondhand bookstore the other day and the owner had made five wreaths from book pages and each one was different. I wish that I would have had my camera with me.

  16. Hello Patricia,
This is a very interesting post which reminded me that I still have a few items from the 1970's tucked away in cupboards. Your coffee set is lovely and looked quite familiar in style to the ones that were around when I was married in early 70's.
Loved seeing your seaside photo of Polperro. Half of my ancestors came from Cornwall.
Thank you very much for your very nice comments on my blog and welcome! I'm looking forward to following you too.

  17. Patricia, I'm Nadezda and I liked your blog especially this post. I think every woman has in her home some things that reminded her about some parties, holidays and those never been used since that day. The coffee set is really nice!
