Food shopping - love it or hate it?

....I hate it with a vengeance. It's one of those jobs that has to be done with a means to an end. After all if it didn't get done then we'd all starve - well probably not but you get my drift.

Apart from driving to the store, going round endless busy aisles choosing what I want, queueing at the busy checkout, pushing the loaded trolley to the car,  filling the boot then emptying it again when I get home I just find this burdensome chore one that I could well do without. Then you have to unpack and put away!

Anyway today was no exception until I reached the magazine racks. Well I couldn't resist this new Cake Decorating magazine. Not that I want to buy it regularly as I think it's a bit of a con to get you to buy it as it goes up next time to £2.99 but it was giving away some useful items - a pretty cardboard cake stand, two butterfly cutters, some edible glitter plus of course the magazine itself, all for 99p which I thought was a bargain. (My husband always says I'm an advertiser's dream - and he's probably right but hey ho)

And then I came across this Crafts Beautiful magazine which I've not seen before and to be honest not something I would normally buy- preferring Mollie Makes and Homemaker magazine etc.

Anyway they were giving away some useful items - two reels of coloured twisted twine, toppers for card making (which I don't do but will come in handy)

and also a book of beautiful printed papers, which I definitely will use.

Isn't it silly how a couple of magazines - totalling today at £5.99 can lift the spirits? I came home a lot happier than I went out - and now it's time to put the kettle on methinks. What cheers your day up?

Welcome to my new followers Mary and Clicky Needles - lovely to have you on board and look forward to seeing you again.

  1. I'm like you Patricia and hate food shopping, actually any kind of shopping really as I don't like crowded places. It always seems to me that the time spent in the shops is wasted but it's a necessary evil.

I bought that cake decorating kit myself and love the butterfly cutters. have you read the information on the back of the glitter? It's seems it's not really edible although they say it's not toxic.

  2. Food shopping - if I think how many days I have spent food shopping since I became an adult it is mind boggling - I have just got out the calculator and done a few sums it adds up to nearly 98,500 times. YIKES! I find it quite stressful too especially now I am on an economy drive looking for bargains and doing mental arithmatic all the way round. The only thing that brings a smile to my face is when the Country Living magazine comes out.

  3. I am reading your post just before I head out to do my weekly shopping. I detest it, and the worst part is putting the stuff away when I get home. You aren't alone!

If you are interested in cake decorating the Craftsy website has some classes. One of them might even be free if I am remembering correctly.

  4. Food shopping is so stressful! I've tried online shopping but I'm always less willing to look for treats for myself in my own home, maybe for that reason the stress is worth it.

  5. I don't mind food shopping since I started doing it in Waitrose! So civilised compared to some supermarkets and I don't find it any more expensive if I stick to my list - and avoid the magazine rack!

  6. It's such a waste of time isn't it!, and it's the putting away at the end that's the last straw. Freebies on magazines are always good. I sometimes get the gardening ones just for the packets of seeds! xx

  7. Sometimes I hate it and sometimes I don't. If I have a lot to buy and the supermarkets are busy with people standing in gangways talking or barging about with trolleys then I hate it. If I want just a few things perhaps for a special recipe or dinner and it is fairly quiet then I don't dislike it. I try to shop early in the morning when it is quieter. A glossy magazine or a bunch of flowers is always a cheerful extra to the shopping basket:)

  8. Hate putting the shopping away too, but if H is around he will do it whilst I will make on a cup of coffee for us both which I prefer to do.

  9. Patricia, I have two kinds of shopping, the everyday slog round the supermarket (well, not EVERY day but you know what I mean) and what I call 'nice shopping'. I don't mean for clothes or crafty stuff, I mean if I go to the market, or farmers market, or a special trip to one of those (probably more expensive) speciality shops. It is always food I buy here, but not mixed up with the loo rolls, washing powder, and so on. Even a trip to a whole foods supermarket is a joy, and I really don't mind unpacking and putting away when I've done this kind of shop.
But the normal supermarket slog I hate, and I sit in the car for a moment when I get home and have a groan at the thought of unpacking and sorting. Isn't it daft?

You are a wicked woman succumbing to two magazines for the freebies!!!! I have just stopped myself from doing this, but I still reach out for them before I remember I've given them up!! Lx

  10. I agree I hate the unloading and packing away maybe it isn't so bad if you have it home delivered but I don't do that! I saw the cake decorating magazine on TV it looks quite good at the price!

  12. Hate the big shop. When the cupboards are full I feel that I need to constantly eat! Mind you that's also because if I don't get there first the other half leaves me nothing, my piggy!
But oh fab treats! Yey! More treats less chores! X

  13. The magazine rack is what makes shopping bearable and a nice danish or iced bun!

  15. You're absolutely right. Grocery/food shopping is NO fun, unless i'm shopping for chocolate and cheese. Nothing else, just those two items. lol. Of course that never happens. I always need to buy.. gasp! vegetables! Oh and magazines. Like you, i can't resist a couple of great mags!

  16. I totally agree with you about the shopping- and yes magazines make it all the better- That's one thing I really miss out here in Boneo - that I can't get hold of my favourite magazines, so when I do get one, it makes it so much more special:)

  17. My husband and I go shopping together to do the food shop. We usually lose one another as we wander around the supermarket aisles and then it takes twice as long. We tend to buy the same items week after week and don't impulse buy, but a quick browse in the charity shop next to the supermarket while my husband is putting the bags in the car makes a routine shopping task more bearable.

  18. I don't mind food shopping. As I don't work, I can go in the daytime when it's quieter, and I write my list in shop order so I'm not wandering around - except when they decide to change things round of course! Like someone else said, I do tend to eat a lot when I get home though which isn't so good on the waistline (but it saves having to pack so much away!).

I do however hate shopping for anything else. I can spend weeks looking for a specific item, until I get so fed up I decide to do without it or rush into something at the last minute.

  19. Dear Patricia, thank you for visiting my blog. I just came over and found yours, and what a treat it is! Exciting you are about to finish a B.A. - I graduated in Art History and English lit in 2007, by far the oldest graduate in my group. Isn't mature age study the best thing - I loved it to bits! Also happily see you live in the area where my daughter (now in Ottawa) lived and taught for several years. We loved to visit, and have been to Southend, and across to Kent, up to London on the train etc. All very familiar. Well, so many things in common and I had better shut up. All the best to you and I am glad I found your blog. Happy St Patrick's day from one Patricia to another.

  20. I hate it and done it as infrequently as possible. Our DD does all her grocery shopping online, so only has to put away what the delivery driver brings. :-)

I'm not a magazine reader, but can quite see why you yielded to the temptation of those two with all their attractive giveaways. You know a bargain when you see one. :-)

  21. I've got the cake magazine as you probably saw on my blog but the others you bought were a treat. Food shopping does not bother me too much and I love it when the things are want have the reduced stickers on! x

  22. I hate shopping food, I agree. But it's necessary, what to do? I only watch at the magazines, do not buy them.

  23. I dont like food shopping either, its a real chore. I must admit I do love looking at the magazines but I dont buy so many these days. My mum occasionally spots new mags and treats me!! Having said that I have subscriptions to Who do you think you are and Country Living, which I look forward to receiving.

  25. I know what you mean when you have to unpack shopping. I have to lug my shopping bags up our front steps but I love thinking about all the lovely things I can cook when i unpack the bags. It's quite special to be at home and be able to share love with food.

  26. I don't enjoy shopping in the big supermarkets and now just about everything on the shelves are their own brand. I try to buy products of Australian owned and made goods, but they are becoming less easy to find these days. Every so often I shop at the smaller locally owned stores, but they are a bit more expensive. I try to shop when there are discounts on some of the products I use.
Don't often buy magazines, tempting as they are. Love the Garden and Country Living ones.
