At Uni they call it "assignment avoidance" - you'd do anything rather than settling down to work. I've been known to start clearing out cupboards and drawers, cleaning the cooker, sorting the freezer - anything rather than starting to write an essay. I guess its a kind of writer's block. You know what you want to say but its actually getting started that's the problem.
So, what did I find? BOOKS!
You'd think I'd have had enough of reading wouldn't you. The one thought that keeps me going is that when its all over I can start some of the craft projects I've been wanting to attempt - crocheting, quilting and journalling. I long to get out there with my camera and start on some serious photography projects. To take myself off for a day with a friend without having to worry about what I should really be doing. So - this is the result of my study avoidance. It's taken several weeks but I've had such fun searching out these particular authors and the excitement is overwhelming at the thought of reading some "normal" books again and I just can't wait!
Bye for now - back again soon
Oh, I remember that avoidance activity when I was studying part-time for the ministry, alongside my day job. I'd would sometimes do almost anything to postposne starting a piece of work, even though |i knew I would enjoy it once I'd actually started.
ReplyDeleteOops, posted too soon. :-) I meant to add my best wishes for the home straight. Just think how much you'll enjoy all those lovely books when you've earned them.
ReplyDeleteNot long now to the end of your degree. What an achievement! I take my hat off to you.Books are always on my list to check out in charity shops, I buy most from there or car boot sales in summer.
ReplyDeleteI do that sometimes with certain chores I need to do, I keep putting them off and do something else instead. Just imagine 3 months and then you're free to pursue your other interests, and time goes by so quickly doesn't it?
ReplyDeleteIt will be gone before you know it and think how stress free you will feel. I felt lost for many months after completing my degree and felt I should be doing something but got used to it after a while.
ReplyDeleteYour on the 'home stretch' and you'll soon be able to think of other things and enjoy reading for pleasure, crafting etc. All the best, Patricia!
ReplyDeleteI remember the 'assignment avoidance' when I was doing OU and as you say you'd do anything to avoid settling down and getting started! You've chosen some good books to read after all the studying I know when I'd finished I was so mentally exhausted I could only manage something like a magazine for a few weeks. Good luck with the final stretch, you are nearly at the winning post:)
ReplyDeleteYou are nearly there Patricia..
ReplyDeleteTake a deep breath and 'go for it'.. just think of all the freedom you will have during the summer months to read your books and go out at leisure and take photos..
am thinking of you.
keep up your spirits..
have a good Tuesday

Just think June will be here in no time, and all of your assignments and study will be completed. I admire your tenacity at taking on such a challenge, it is much harder to do when you are older, and have lots of other commitments too.
ReplyDeleteThe books can be put away on the shelves ready for next winter.
Keep it up.
Congrats on seeing the light at the end, and I wish you all the best for the last little bit. Just go for it, and before you know it, you'll be reading and crafting to your heart's content again!
ReplyDeleteGood luck,
xx
Diversionary tactics! Ah yes, me the ironing-hater has been known to rush off to attack a huge pile of ironing rather than slog through yet another page of referencing, when I did my Health Visiting Diploma. You are so nearly there, crack on, it will all be worth it!
ReplyDeleteI am your newest follower! I too am a college student but I won't be finished until October. Sometimes it is so hard to keep on. Good luck with your studies!
ReplyDeleteThat pile of books is a real temptation to play 'intellectual truant'!!!! Good luck with the final stages of the course. Jx
ReplyDeleteOh it is so nice to know I am not alone in wishing I could do so many wonderful things and being torn in so many interesting directions that it keeps me from doing not even one! I do however plan to be forthright and pick one thing to concentrate on , at least for the moment. So many wonderful things calling my name ~ ha ha By the way, lovely collection of books!
ReplyDeleteYou're so close to finishing now! I went through assignment avoidance too. We have similar tastes in books - I've read the Alison Weir and Philippa Gregory books too :) Have a great day, Elisabeth x
ReplyDeleteI know that feeling of putting things off! What an impressive pile of books that will keep you busy for a while. Hope it has given you some encouragement to finish your degree.

Sorry Patricia but this post seems to have slipped through the net. I admire anyone who wants to further their education it must be hard work as you get older - it was bad enough when young. Your persistance will pay off, no doubt about it - then getting down to reading all those lovely books will be your reward.
ReplyDeleteoh I remember that feeling well, even though it's five years since I finished my degree! Good luck with the final few months :)
